An AI is useful to a Shopify seller when it can answer three questions from the payout data: which products contribute after shipping, fees, and ads; how much of the discount line is planned promotion and how much is leakage; and, if ad data is attached, how fast a new customer pays back the cost of acquiring them. The Shopify admin reports sales, orders, and sessions well. It does not report contribution, because it does not hold your cost of goods, and it does not join discounts, shipping, and ad spend on one product line. The join is the work, and it has to be done before any AI is worth asking.
Shopify's help center describes the Shopify Payments activity report as a breakdown of transactions, fees, and payouts for a selected date range and currency, covering gross activity, fees, payouts, and the ending balance. The same help center notes that payouts can be scheduled daily, weekly, or monthly, that reserves can hold back part of a payout, and that your credit card rate depends on your Shopify plan. Stores using a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments pay both a transaction fee to Shopify and the provider's processing fee, per the same source.
A payout, once unpacked, contains gross sales, discounts, refunds, Shopify Payments fees, and any adjustments or reserve movements. Three costs that determine profit are not in it at all:
Ad spend from Meta, Google, or TikTok sits in a fourth place. The payout reconciliation itself, deposit by deposit, is covered in Shopify to Xero: reconciling payouts.
Illustrative numbers. Take a DTC skincare brand with three products, selling through Shopify Payments only, in August.
Contribution: $71,700 plus $4,100 minus $7,600 minus $2,250 minus $900 minus $24,500 minus $18,000 equals $22,550, or 31.4 percent of net sales.
The Shopify admin shows the first three lines and the shipping charged. The rest is assembled from the carrier bill, the app invoices, the purchase orders, and two ad platforms.
Split the same month three ways, allocating payment fees by net sales, shipping by actual carrier cost per order, and ad spend by the product each campaign sold. Apps stay unallocated.
$14,710 plus $4,740 plus $4,000 minus $900 of apps equals $22,550. Ties.
The moisturizer is the surprise. It has the second-highest sales and the lowest contribution rate, and $1,700 of shipping the customer did not pay for on a heavy jar is 8 points of that rate. A free-shipping threshold set for the serum's weight is costing the moisturizer twice what it costs the serum, per dollar of sales. That finding is invisible in an admin that shows shipping charged and never sees shipping paid.
$9,200 of discounts breaks down, once each order's code is tagged by customer history:
The last line is leakage. A code meant to acquire customers was found by 610 existing ones, and $3,400 came off orders that would have been placed at full price. About half of the leaked redemptions, $1,700, landed on moisturizer orders from customers who had bought it before at full price, so the product with the thinnest margin also gave away the most. The fix is a one-use-per-customer rule and a check of where the code is published.
August brought 1,150 first-order customers. If the $18,000 of ad spend is acquisition spend, blended cost per new customer is $15.65. First-order contribution before ads, averaged, is $19.40, so the first order pays back acquisition with $3.75 to spare. That calculation is only possible when ad spend is attached to orders by product and by campaign. ConnectBooks connects Google Ads data to QuickBooks or Xero; other platforms need their spend brought into the books by campaign before the question can be answered.
An AI on the reconciled month above answers the three questions in the form you asked them, and it does so across every product, every code, and every month, rather than the one month you rebuilt by hand.
Crunch, the analytics AI inside ConnectBooks, reads reconciled Shopify data alongside Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, and eBay, and answers questions about profit, margins, advertising, inventory, fees, and cash flow. Ask which product's contribution margin has fallen the most since spring and why, and it works the chain: what changed across sales, pricing, ads, fees, returns, and margins; over the periods you named; on which products; the reasons; and a recommendation. The moisturizer's shipping gap and the leaked welcome code are exactly the kind of cause it surfaces, because the SKU-level profit report it reads already has shipping paid, fees, refunds, and landed cost on the product line. The Shopify side of that reconciliation is described on the Shopify integration page.
It cannot compute CAC payback without ad spend in the books. If Meta spend lives only in Meta, the AI either omits it (and overstates contribution) or you enter it by campaign first.
It cannot tell you the welcome code leaked through a coupon aggregator. It sees returning customers using a first-order code. The channel is yours to find.
It cannot value your inventory if landed cost was entered as invoice price. Skincare COGS often carries meaningful freight and duty; leave those off and every product's margin above is overstated by the same few points, and the ranking may still hold while the absolute figures are wrong.
It cannot see the carrier bill unless the shipping cost per order is in the data. Shipping paid is the line that flipped the moisturizer's story, and it is the line most Shopify sellers have never joined.
It takes no action. It does not change the free-shipping threshold or restrict the code. It tells you what it found, and the Shopify admin stays with you.
Rebuild the three questions on your own August. Then decide whether you want to do it again in September.
