Contra revenue is a group of accounts that reduce gross sales to net sales: sales discounts, sales returns, and sales allowances. They sit in the revenue section of the income statement with a debit balance, so the P&L shows what you charged at list, what you gave back, and what you kept.
A seller can report the same net sales two ways. One posts every order at the price received, so revenue arrives already net. The other posts gross sales at full price and records each discount, return, and allowance in its own contra account. Net sales come out identical. Only the second shows you how much revenue you gave away to earn it.
That difference decides whether you can answer questions like "did Black Friday cost more in discounts this year than last?" or "is our return rate rising on one channel?" without rebuilding the data from order exports. It also decides whether your margin percentages mean anything, because a gross margin computed on net sales already has the discount buried inside it.
The three components:
Marketplace fees refunded with a return are not contra revenue. They reduce the fee expense that was charged on the original sale.
Illustrative numbers. Take a seller comparing October and November.
October:
November, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday:
Gross sales doubled, up 100 percent. Net sales rose $130,000, or 76.5 percent. The gap is the contra-revenue rate climbing from 15 to 25 percent. Discounts account for 8 of those 10 points, rising from 9 percent of gross to 17 percent.
A seller who books only net sales sees revenue up 76.5 percent and a good month. A seller with contra accounts sees the same thing, plus the fact that every $100 of list-price sales cost $25 in give-backs instead of $15. If gross margin on the P&L dropped in November, the contra lines explain how much of the drop came from pricing rather than from COGS or fees.
November's returns will also keep arriving. The extended holiday return windows that Amazon and Walmart published for 2026 let most items bought in their holiday windows come back until January 31, 2027, so a share of November's sales will reverse as January contra revenue. Whether to estimate those returns at month end is a question for your CPA.
Each channel reports these items in its own vocabulary, and the mapping is where errors creep in.
ConnectBooks accounting reconciles the transactions, fees, and returns inside marketplace settlements and Shopify payouts, then syncs them to QuickBooks or Xero as summarized entries or item-level detail, instead of leaving you one net deposit to unpick. Mapped to separate accounts, that keeps the contra lines visible by channel and by period, which is what the October to November comparison needs.
Where each of these lines hides on a typical seller P&L is the subject of the five P&L lines that lie.
No. It sits in the revenue section and reduces revenue. An expense would sit below gross profit. The distinction matters for gross margin: put discounts in an expense account and your net sales and gross margin both look higher than they are.
No. The fee a marketplace charges you to run a promotion is a selling expense. The discount the customer receives is contra revenue. Mixing them overstates one and hides the other.
You need to be able to report contra revenue by channel. Separate accounts, classes, or tracking categories all work. One combined account for every channel makes a rising return rate on a single marketplace invisible.
Shipping you do not charge for is not a discount on product revenue. It shows up as lower shipping income and the full shipping cost in expenses. A free-shipping code is usually best reported with shipping, not with product discounts, so product discount rates stay comparable.
